Designed & handmade in our London workshop
Lapis is a gemstone of intense blue, mainly derived from the presence of lazurite, a blue silicate mineral. Golden speckles of pyrite create metallic highlights in the stone. Throughout history this stone has been prized for its unique colour and was often ground down to form a rare blue pigment. The use of Lapis lazuli in fine jewellery has been discovered as far back as Neolithic times, ancient Mesopotamia and the Bronze Age. Lapis is not actually a mineral like other gemstones but a rock compromised of several minerals.Today, mines in northeast Afghanistan and Pakistan are still the major source of lapis lazuli. Important amounts are also produced from mines west of Lake Baikal in Russia, and in the Andes mountains in Chile. Smaller quantities are mined in Italy, Mongolia, the United States, and Canada. Its an interesting material and we like to use it in the workshop here in Islington to make our luxury fine jewellery.
